MRS. EDDY points out in Science and Health that we cannot understand divine Principle unless we have a correct sense of its highest visible idea. Therefore in approaching the work of translating one of her writings, the translator must endeavor to gain a correct understanding of our Leader. This means, of course, that he must have a clear understanding of her place as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and of her God-appointed mission to reveal Christian Science to mankind in fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. Only then will the translator understand her revelation of the divine Principle sufficiently to be able to translate her message into his mother tongue.
To appreciate Mrs. Eddy's unique style as an author, the student of Christian Science should realize that she is the greatest author of spiritual subjects the world has known since the writing of the Gospels and other parts of the New Testament.
Christ Jesus frequently pointed out to his hearers that his teachings originated in God. John recorded these words of our Master (7:16, 17): "My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself." In the same way, our Leader referred to herself as one under divine orders. She transcribed into the human tongue what was given to her from God and what she had realized and demonstrated of the true spiritual facts of being. That is why her writings have blessed and are continuing to bless many thousands; through them the sick are healed, the sinning are reformed, the sorrowful are comforted.
