TO humanity, in general, existence seems to be a round of material events; Christian Science, with irrefutable proof, reveals true existence to be spiritual. This Science presents a clear distinction between so called material, or mortal, man and the real man, the manifestation of God.
MARY BAKER EDDY, who discovered Christian Science nearly a century ago, says in "Miscellaneous Writings" ( p. 21 ), "As the ages advance in spirituality, Christian Science will be seen to depart from the trend of other Christian denominations in no wise except by increase of spirituality.
ACCORDING to Christian Science, man's identity is spiritual. Man is the reflection of Mind and can no more conform to a so-called mentality other than that of the divine than can a reflection in a mirror conform to an object not in front of the mirror.
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE reveals and proclaims man's unity with God. Because God made man in His image and likeness, man must be the expression of God's being.
JESUS did not employ the pseudo force, called evil, to combat evil; rather he employed the power of good, which ultimately proved its complete supremacy to an extent which had not previously been exampled on the human scene. The pressure brought to bear upon him was beyond anything the human senses had been called upon to withstand.
MANKIND'S dire need for a comforter was perhaps never so universally acknowledged as now in this atomic age. "To comfort" means "to impart strength and hope to" or "to relieve of mental distress.
AS we accept the teaching of Christian Science, we certainly learn that material appearances do not reveal the truth of what is happening around us. When Jesus became aware that his disciples were consistently seeing matter as real and seemed to misunderstand his purpose and meaning, he asked them a little sadly, "Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not?" ( Mark 8:18.
UP to the time that our great Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, discovered Christian Science, or the spiritual laws which emanate from God and which govern the universe and man, scientific truth was not regarded as related to divine law and power. It was thought to be associated not with Spirit but with matter and its so called laws.
REASON and intellect are the principal means by which the vast body of human learning has been built up, and their development and improvement are a very important function of education, especially at the universities. Without them, civilized society would lose a great part of its value and interest.
In the fourth chapter of II Kings we are given the account of a widow about to lose her two sons to a creditor who would take them as bondmen to satisfy a debt she was unable to meet. She appealed to Elisha, who asked, "What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house?" She replied that she had nothing save a pot of oil.
