UP to the time that our great Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, discovered Christian Science, or the spiritual laws which emanate from God and which govern the universe and man, scientific truth was not regarded as related to divine law and power. It was thought to be associated not with Spirit but with matter and its so called laws.
In her book "Miscellaneous Writings," Mrs. Eddy states (p. 58), "All Science is divine, not human, in origin and demonstration." Here she capitalizes the word "Science" and by doing so separates it from that which is termed "natural science"; thus she signifies that Science is an expression of the divine, of God and His eternal, absolute government of all that exists.
Mrs. Eddy uses the word "Science" many times in her writings. It appears in the title of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Here she sets forth her teachings of absolute Science—divine Science—which, though it has always existed, was largely unperceived and unemployed before her discovery. She named her discovery Christian Science, thus identifying her teachings with the Science of Christianity, the Science of spiritual knowing and healing, which Jesus understood and practiced.
