BE NOT DISMAYED

From the March 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

SINCE World War II, there have been disturbing instances of the use of thought-control methods, whereby masses or individuals may be erroneously influenced. Christian Science teaches us to take positive steps to protect ourselves and others from any system of thought-control and to uphold righteous government. In fact, Mrs. Eddy imposes upon us a solemn duty. Speaking of the mental fermentation taking place in these times, she says in Science and Health, "During this final conflict, wicked minds will endeavor to find means by which to accomplish more evil; but those who discern Christian Science will hold crime in check" (pp. 96, 97). Holding "crime in check" is a challenge when we consider international as well as local crime.

Mrs. Eddy also says (ibid., p. 94), "Tyranny, intolerance, and bloodshed, wherever found, arise from the belief that the infinite is formed after the pattern of mortal personality, passion, and impulse." It follows, then, that the right understanding of God is basic to true government, whether of a nation or of the world.

The writer of Deuteronomy set forth a concept of God as unique and victorious when he wrote, "There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky" (33:26). This concept was made more specific when Jesus described God as Spirit. The writers of the New Testament declared or implied that God is Mind, Truth, Life, Soul, and Love, as well as Spirit.
