JESUS did not employ the pseudo force, called evil, to combat evil; rather he employed the power of good, which ultimately proved its complete supremacy to an extent which had not previously been exampled on the human scene. The pressure brought to bear upon him was beyond anything the human senses had been called upon to withstand. Still, with his divine sense of the ever-presence of God, good, Jesus proved the energies of good equal to the meeting of his need right up to his ascension.
Christian Science unveils the true sense of good. It shows us that good is not merely a comfort or reassurance playing upon the human emotions. Good is God, and good characterizes the functions of divine law. Viewed thus, good becomes a mighty power in our lives and reveals a particular facet of the truth of being. The law of good, operating in the destruction of evil, takes being out of the problematic scale and places it where it has always factually been: wholly separate from evil influence, complete and sufficient to meet every demand made upon it.
The finding of a means to destroy evil has occupied the thought of mankind for many centuries. However, it can hardly be said that the problem has been solved by humanity when evil still threatens in many quarters and the headlines in our newspapers bring continual report of its seeming activities. But there is a way, and the student of Christian Science, through earnest, steadfast application of this Science of Christ, has the opportunity to know this way. Mrs. Eddy discovered it nearly a century ago and has voiced it in Science and Health thus: "Evil is destroyed by the sense of good" (p. 311). This true sense of good destroys evil on the basis of the allness of God, not by knowing evil and entering into combat with it as a real foe.
