THE "WORKS" AND THE "GREATER WORKS"

From the March 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

MARY BAKER EDDY, who discovered Christian Science nearly a century ago, says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 21), "As the ages advance in spirituality, Christian Science will be seen to depart from the trend of other Christian denominations in no wise except by increase of spirituality."

The Bible is receiving more widespread attention than heretofore. Its spiritual interpretation has been given special impetus through the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The laws of God set forth in the Scriptures are being more generally studied so as to be applied to daily living. The end result of such investigation leads naturally to Christian healing, through spiritual means only, of sickness as well as of sin.

The central figure of the New Testament, as is sustained by all Christianity, is Christ Jesus. He is the Exemplar of Christian Science, for he alone has demonstrated this Science in its fullest practical application to the solution of human problems. He mastered every claim of the false senses that life and intelligence are in matter. He proved the immortality of man, made in God's likeness. He passed from the experience of the grave to ascension above all materiality.
