The Bible contains many accounts of mankind's deliverance from bondage to fear through the understanding that man really lives in Love, God. Moses' many experiences taught him the love of God.
When we use the word "I," as we so frequently do, to what are we referring? Do we not usually have in thought a person encumbered by a material body, equipped with his own intellect and will? We habitually ascribe to this person varying quantities of goodness, health, ability, happiness, and supply. Perhaps we are sometimes afraid for this selfhood, sometimes proud or ashamed of it, and often in bondage to it.
Resting at the edge of a busy outdoor market place one sunny morning, a student of Christian Science was suddenly filled with gratitude for the hint of God's glory mirrored in the scene before her— the beauty of color, the rhythmic activity, the harmonious order and continuity of movement. All at once her pattern of thought was sharply interrupted, for nearby a loud, impatient voice was expressing emphatic disgust with the whole picture! To this person, evidently, all that came to view were crowded shopping conditions, tiresome duties, and perhaps loss of time and energy.
In the Bible we read ( Ps. 29:2 ), "Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
In the Old Testament are many evidences of the people's hope for a deliverer or a great prophet who would inspire or lead them. The prophets had glimpses of the Messiah, and others of the great Old Testament characters showed some recognition of the Christ.
There is a universal belief that the measurement of a man's life must be in terms of years, that man is a mortal, experiencing birth, growth, maturity, old age, and decay. The teachings of Christian Science show that this belief need not be accepted, for it is not actually a law governing man.
The thought of establishing a Board of Lectureship came to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in answer to her earnest prayers to God for guidance in forwarding her revelation of Christian Science. It was an angel message which she heard and heeded.
