In various parts of the New Testament we are instructed to pray in the name of Christ, and to pray "without ceasing. " Realizing the impossibility of unceasing prayer from the standpoint of the ordinary conception of prayer, and not understanding the real, spiritual meaning of these instructions, many Christian people have concluded that they are not practicable.
There is no love without service, and there is no service to be compared to loving service. There is a joy and a blessing which come through unselfish labor for others that can be obtained in no other way.
How often we hear the remark made, sometimes half heartedly, then again with a certain pathetic yearning in the tone. "Oh, if I just had the understanding that some people have, or if I could talk as well as some people do, I would not mind giving a testimony at a Wednesday evening service, and how glad I would be to give this healing truth to those in need of it!" Let us stop a moment and analyze this desire, for if it be a true one it is prayer, according to the teaching of our dear Leader (see Science and Health, p.
With that willingness to learn which characterizes all seekers after truth, Christian Scientists are glad to acknowledge that whatever their Leader regarded as important should be practised by her followers. They count it a privilege to heed every caution and injunction which she has uttered for the protection and progress of the cause of Christian Science and of every individual who has regularly enlisted under its banner of freedom for the overcoming of sin, disease, and death.
Christ Jesus, who was the great teacher and demonstrator of true theology, brought healing and salvation to a people in bondage to pagan teachings and practices. The vast majority of the people of his era worshiped false gods and made images to represent their material concept, of these deities.
What an insistent and grievous part the proverbial "rainy day" has played in the lives of mankind. Anticipation of this day of clouds and darkness often shadows an otherwise sunny present; and the statement frequently made to children that "we must save for a rainy day," has sadly restricted immediate hopes and happy plans, besides forming the basis of a false education, tending to handicap them through the years.
All who subscribe to the tenets of The Mother Church make the following acknowledgment: "We acknowledge Jesus' atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Wayshower" (Science and Health, p. 497 ).
