Poems
Through all our days of sorrow There sounds the certain strain Of God's eternal kindness, Of Mind's supreme demesne. Through all our tears and trials, Through all the hours forlorn, A glorious faith is beaming, A joyous hope is born.
The Mind that hitherto has planned my footsteps, Telling me where to go and what to do, Will still impart intelligence sufficient To guide me safely all my journey through. In Soul I find a sweet and calm assurance Of Love's protecting care throughout the day.
Lord, give me grace To face each newborn day with high intent; Encased within the armor of Thy love To meet each seeming foe with quiet strength, And prove Thy truth is law. Grant me serenity of heart And peace that cannot be disturbed, Then with compassion may I see each fault That mortal man presents, unreal, And know Thy image is untouched, secure.
This is my prayer, dear Lord, that I may learn The beauty of humility, and yearn For that deep faith that will secure abide, Challenging worldly arrogance and pride. Help me to see the flower where the weed Of mortal mind would fain its error breed; And may I too dispense the perfume rare Of kindliness, to lighten earthly care.
Keep me, dear God, so close to Thee, That tender dawns may symbols be Of light that shines eternally. Dear God, keep me so close to Thee, That each fair-petaled flower I see, May hint Thy loving smile on me; So close that glowing sunset skies Help me to see with opened eyes The glory that in Spirit lies; So close that in each one I see The image of divinity, The loveliness that comes from Thee; So close, dear God, when shadows fall, And softly sounds the robin's call, I know Thy love encircles all.
Oh, let us all arise and sing; Joy is a constant, living thing, A well that in the heart doth spring. Rejoice, ye righteous, now! It matters not what sense may say; The mist departs with break of day.
All unafraid I walk with God; Serene my pathway lies; My hand in His, I tread the heights That lead to paradise.
Teach me to give. Not grudgingly with measure spare, Cold reticence, regretful care, But as Love's full reflection may I give, Yielding my life, my love, myself, each hour I live In joyous abnegation.
That star of hope by Wisemen seen, Foretold the glory bright, Which crowned the first glad Easter morn With radiance and might, When Christ rolled back the clouds of sense With Truth's effulgent ray, And brought the light and liberty Of Love's eternal day. You who accept the mortal law Of death, disease, and sin, Who fight a losing fight with fear, And do not hope to win, Arise! for to the waking thought The Christ again is near, Speaking the word of Life and Love Unto the listening ear.
Perturbed about the wickedness of others, Men thought their punishment was gospel truth; 'Twas vain to think of sinful men as brothers, For erring ones they had not any ruth. Small was their saintly group assured of heaven, For sinners there was only hopeless hell; But Jesus' words have been the sacred leaven Transforming men from fear and thoughts so fell.
