Testimonies of Healing
Few can have had more reason for coming to Christian Science than I had, and yet after my previous experiences I might never have taken it up but for its name. When Christian Science was mentioned to me, rather more than two years ago, not having previously heard anything about it, the name gave the suggestion that it might be the very thing which had once seemed possible, in the vague hopes, the undefined feelings awakened by the Gospel words, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," etc.
Like many others I came to Christian Science for the healing, at a time when I was a physical wreck, sick and weary of materia medica, which I had been trying for many years. Eleven years ago I was suffering from bronchial consumption, a trouble which I had from childhood and which was constantly growing worse.
I had for many years been a member of an orthodox church, when about six years ago my wife and youngest daughter became interested in Christian Science. My two older daughters and I were not interested in what we considered the peculiar teachings of Science, and only attended the services upon rare occasions.
About eight years ago I found myself in an alarming physical and mental condition. I could scarcely sleep, eat, breathe, or walk without great suffering.
Words are wholly inadequate to tell of the darkness from which I have been rescued, or of my gratitude for deliverance. It is now three years since I began to study Christian Science.
Through the faithfulness of several loyal students of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and my own study of the Christian Science text-book, given to the world through the unselfish and untiring devotion of its author, Mrs. Eddy, I have been healed in body, and have gained a spiritual consciousness of the truth of being.
When six years old I had an operation for squinting, after which it was found necessary for me to wear glasses, for if anything was attempted which required close sight, the eyes immediately crossed. At the age of fourteen, one eye was said to be practically useless.
In offering my testimony I wish to state that my doing so is purely voluntary. This has been left entirely to the dictates of my own conscience, a course which is pursued in Christian Science in all matters relating to the individual; and in no other relationship have I experienced such freedom or received such impetus to work out my own salvation, unquestioned and unrebuked, except as I asked for help.
I was confined to my bed for three months with varicose veins and heart trouble. My physician told me that an operation for the removal of a portion of the vein was necessary, but I had a great fear of the knife, so consulted another physician, who advised me to hold myself in readiness to go at any moment, as the condition of my heart indicated that I was liable to die instantly.
For sixteen years Christian Science has been the only remedy for all our ills. About seventeen years prior to hearing of Christian Science I was taken very ill, and a medical doctor who was called in said I was completely run down and that my blood had turned to water.
