The temptation to believe in evil as real is common to all mankind. The Apostle Paul said, in his letter to the Romans (7:19, 21) , "For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do," and, "I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
One of the passages most frequently quoted by Christian Scientists from their textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"by Mary Baker Eddy, is the definition of "Church," found on page 583 . The first paragraph of this definition reads as follows: "Church.
Even in the midst of opposing clamor, the presage of peace may be heard. "To presage" is defined as "to indicate by some present fact what is to come to pass.
On page 260 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Science reveals the possibility of achieving all good, and sets mortals at work to discover what God has already done.
" The tree of the knowledge of good and evil" still dangles before the material senses its forbidden fruit of belief in intelligent matter. Christian Science does not present the picture of a personal God who dispenses health and sickness, trouble and prosperity, according to merit or demerit, and makes use of evil as a disciplinary measure.
The thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians has been called "St. Paul's Hymn to Love," and has also been referred to as "a lyrical interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount—the Beatitudes set to music.
Under the marginal heading, "Christ's mission," on page 233 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes, "Already the shadow of His right hand rests upon the hour.
NEW PRICES FOR OUR PERIODICALS It is commonly known that during recent months, prices of many commodities have substantially increased. This is especially true of the printing industry, particularly of that branch involved in the publication of newspapers.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" ( p. 474 ), "Christian marvels (and marvel is the simple meaning of the Greek word rendered miracle in the New Testament) will be misunderstood and misused by many, until the glorious Principle of these marvels is gained.
SUPERSTITION formerly associated with natural phenomena is being dispelled by more accurate observation. But in the domain of religion, superstition still obtains.
