Testimonies of Healing
If young students or beginners in the study of Christian Science would commence at once to apply its teaching, they would realize the fulfilment of the wonderful words from Isaiah, "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee. " An aunt wrote me of her seemingly wonderful healing through Christian Science treatment.
" Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" was first placed in my hands about twelve years ago. I remember saying, after having read several pages, that it had an uplifting influence which was remarkable.
Early in April, 1905, our little boy, aged two years, was seized with high fever followed by violent spasms, from no apparent cause. A very serious nervous condition followed for four days, when a state of coma set in.
I WAS taken sick about August, 1901, and was treated by a physician, who called my complaint enlargement of the liver with gastric complications. There was no improvement in my condition, but gradually I grew worse.
Previous to the entrance of Christian Science into my life, about fifteen years ago, I may say that I scarcely knew what it meant to be well. I was of a very active disposition, but the least effort was invariably followed by headache, extreme nervousness, and frequently by complete exhaustion.
When a young man I suffered from an attack of diphtheria, and after that my throat was in a very weak condition. I took cold easily, which would go either to the head or lungs.
From my childhood I was troubled with biliousness and sick stomach, accompanied with severe sick-headaches. As I grew into manhood my trouble continued to grow.
I did not become a Christian Scientist from physical healing, of which, however, I was sorely in need, for a lifelong liver trouble seemed culminating toward its sequel in frequent attacks of stupor accompanied by swollen extremities. This was relieved only by a great upheaval of the whole system, with relapses after short intervals into a more aggravated condition.
It was in April, 1904, that I first heard the "still, small voice" of the Christ and received healing through Christian Science; and the blessings have been so many since, that it would take too much space to name them. Reared from childhood in an intellectual atmosphere, my paternal grandfather having been an orthodox minister of the old school for forty years, and my father a deep student, ever seeking for the truth of all things, I began early to ponder and to study into the meaning of life, and came to the conclusion before I was twenty that though God probably existed in some remote place, still it was impossible to connect Him with my present living.
My gratitude for Christian Science is beyond all words, and I cannot begin to enumerate the blessings actually seen and experienced which have come to me through my study of our Leader's works and the help of practitioners. About fifteen years ago, when a schoolgirl, I had an attack of spinal meningitis of such a serious nature that, in spite of attendance by three eminent physicians, the time came that all hope was abandoned, and but three hours of life were assured me.
