Testimonies of Healing
The question is often asked, Will Christian Science heal organic disease? and I desire to testify to my own healing in the hope that it will reach some one who needs help as did I. I was brought up by a good Christian mother, taught to go to church, and had the benefit of good example, but when manhood came I severed my relationship with the church and drifted into agnosticism.
In June, 1904, my wife fell from the street car and broke her arm. She went to a physician, who placed it in splints.
I wish to testify to what Christian Science has done for me. When I was about four years old I had scarlet fever, which left me a nervous wreck.
I had suffered for about five years from a general breakdown in health, had gone from one physician to another until three of Topeka's best physicians had done all they could for me without success; I had tried all sorts of medicines and supports as fast as recommended by interested friends, with no improvement whatever, but rather a terrible hopelessness of ever being any better. Then, what seemed to me the last straw was added to my burden, for my eyes, which I had been using very steadily, suddenly began to pain me so severely that I was compelled to protect them from every ray of light.
My attention was first called to Christian Science in 1896, while in the Northwest. At the time I was actively engaged in the slum mission and revival work and was preparing to enter the ministry.
Christian Science has brought me so many blessings, that I give my testimony with sincerest gratitude. It has turned my sorrow into joy, my sickness into health, and has given me the understanding that Life is God, and that God is Love.
I can hardly find words to express my love and gratitude to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who made known to us the great truth that God will heal us when we turn to Him.
About nineteen years ago my father, after years of suffering from asthma and after all remedies known to materia medica had failed to give relief, was passing along a street in the city of Denver in a state of abject despair, when the sign of a Christian Science practitioner arrested his attention. It instantly occurred to him that Christian Science might do for him what medicine had failed to do, and though he knew nothing of it the name bespoke a super-human power which roused his weary sense and led him to seek divine aid.
It is twenty-one years since I first met a Christian Scientist. Then I was in quest of health and happiness, which I had not known for many years.
For several years previous to my healing in Christian Science, I was a physical wreck, suffering from organic troubles, chronic inflammation, weak stomach, heart disease, and nervous prostration. I had been under the care of many of the best physicians in this city, but received no benefit, the last two doctors having decided that an operation was necessary.
