EFFECT OF MIND ON THE BODY

From the April 1884 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To the Editor of the "Journal."—Please publish in your valuable paper, that has furnished remarkable evidence of the power of Divine Mind over the body to save from sickness, the following brief sketch of the death of the late Dr. Frank L. Ilea, of the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Chicago, illustrating the great fact, viz: That the mortal, or erring mind, kills its own body, and that disease originates mentally, as you explain in your published works.

Previous to his death, he had been attending a case, at the hospital, of facial carbuncle, to which he gave much study, searching all Medical Works on the subject until his mind became absorbed in meditating on the fatality and locality of every symptom, and the body partook of his mental condition and conclusions. The daily papers report, that on July 30th, "He felt a slight pricking sensation on his upper lip. He went below stairs to a druggist and asked him to pluck a hair out of his moustache over the place. When the druggist had complied, Dr. Rea looked at its bulbless end and said, 'Mr. Jacobson, that is the last of me; it is a facial carbuncle. I will lock my office, bid you good-by, and go home to die." The druggist laughed at him; but the young physician went away leaving a card that he did not know when he would return. He went to his uncle's house and told him what he had experienced, and in spite of all attempts to persuade him that nothing serious was the matter, and the best medical aid, in ten days he was dead."

As the food we eat becomes a part of the body, according to physiology, so thought, our mental food, is both voluntarily and involuntarily assimilated by the body and brought into action and results. 'Whatsoever entereth in at the mouth is cast out into the draught,' the scripture saith; but those things which remain in thought go not out unless cast out by mind, and they will bear fruit after their own kind on the body, and "the best medical aid" in the world is powerless against this effect, if ignorant of the science of mind and metaphysical healing. How many human lives have been sacrificed on account of this ignorance?
