About four years ago I heard of some wonderful healing through the efficacy of Christian Science. I said, "If Christian Science can produce such results in cases of chronic illness, where materia medica is powerless, this teaching must be of God, and must be in conformity with the Holy Scriptures, and I felt a desire to hear more of it.
For over sixteen years I had been active as a trained nurse, always animated with a desire to help the poor and suffering. I was working in a hospital when I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy for the first time, to find out what gave this teaching the power to heal and bring happiness. I understood very little of what I was reading, yet this little understanding brought to me such peace that I used every spare moment to read to this book. I had always read my Bible, but now it became illumined to me as never before through the spiritual light of this wondrous book.
Several weeks later I was suddenly taken ill with what the physicians call cholera morbus, from which I had suffered before. The pain was severe. Many of the nurses in the hospital came to me and wanted to persuade me to call a physician or take medicine. I refused to do so and relied entirely upon God for my help. I prayed to my heavenly Father for healing and guidance to know whether this teaching was the truth. There I lay struggling like Jacob until about four o'clock in the morning, when a heavenly peace came to me, all pain disappeared, and I fell quietly asleep, conscious of God's presence. A few hours later I awoke well and happy. God had heard my prayer and shown me the right way. I left the hospital, devoted several months to the study of Science and Health, and blessings and peace which I experienced cannot be expressed in words.
