Testimonies of Healing

From the April 1903 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Several years ago I had the misfortune to sustain a fracture of the left leg which healed under surgical treatment after a somewhat protracted confinement. After I was able to get about again I experienced more or less difficulty in walking, and was obliged to use a crutch or cane even when traveling a comparatively short distance. In addition to this weakness of the limb, other abnormal conditions arose, the cords of the legs seemed to enlarge and were very painful at times, and considerable swelling from the knee to the ankle was in evidence. After suffering for some little time from this trouble, I decided to consult one of the most eminent surgeons in New England, who, after making a careful examination of the leg, informed me that I had a well-developed case of varicose veins, and he furthermore stated that he knew of nothing that would relieve them except a surgical operation. I had a very natural dislike to undergoing an operation of this sort, but had about decided to succumb to what seemed to be the in evitable, when a friend recommended that I try Christian Science for the trouble. At first thought it seemed very ridiculous that mental treatment of any sort would be of any assistance in a case of this kind, but as a drowning man catches at a straw, I was willing to try almost any thing that offered a slight prospect of ridding me of the necessity of undergoing the surgical operation. While I had but little faith in the treatment, I found, after the Christian Science practitioner had treated me for two or three weeks, that the elastic stocking which I had been wearing was getting loose and that other diseased conditions were disappearing, and a few weeks later I was entirely healed of the varicose veins and all attendant weakness of the limb. This healing occurred over two years ago, and since that time there has been no return of the difficulty. For this proof of the efficacy of Christian Science, I am very grateful to its Discoverer and Founder and to the friends who encouraged me in my investigation of it. During the past two years I have recommended Christian Science to a number of friends, and in every instance where they have given it a trial the results have been most gratifying.—
