I wish to give my testimony as to the power of Truth...

From the August 1903 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I wish to give my testimony as to the power of Truth in the treatment of broken bones. A year ago, while at work among a lot of machinery, in trying to place a belt on a pulley, my foot slipped off the rung of a ladder on which I was standing, and a set screw of the revolving shaft caught the lower part of my trousers and in a moment my leg was wrapped about the shaft. As I felt myself slipping I grasped a beam above me to which I clung. Somehow my leg became disengaged and I was free. Thinking my ankle badly dislocated, I clambered down the ladder, an elevation of eight feet, as well as I could under the circumstances. Placing my foot on the floor I found the leg broken below the knee and badly splintered. I sat down and realized the truth of being as well as I could, but fear was great and I resolved to send for a Christian Science practitioner.

My employer now appeared and insisted on my being placed under a doctor's care at once. I protested, telling him the hurt was not so serious, but finally yielded. The doctor, who had already been sent for, now appeared, and after examining my leg, declared it broken in two places below the knee, badly splintered, and the ankle dislocated. I overheard him telling others that the leg would very likely have to be amputated. He bandaged my leg and told me that he could do nothing that day, as he was obliged to wait for the swelling to disappear. He said that he expected to remove some of the bone splinters the next day, and perhaps the limb.

I sent for Christian Science treatment that same evening. During the night the bandage seemed too tight on account of the leg having become slightly swollen. I ripped the bandage off and threw it away, feeling more comfortable after that.
