I used to think when I was taking Christian Science treatment that if I were ever healed I would write my testimony for the Journal, because I received so much help from those who had written of their healing.
Mine is the old but sweet story that so many have told before. My life has been saved through the healing power of Christian Science as taught in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy. One year ago last April, after every material remedy had failed me, I turned like a tired child to God through Christian Science for help. I had been an invalid for thirteen years, suffering greatly most of the time, and gradually growing worse. My troubles seemed to have been occasioned by the birth of a child, and many physicians said nothing but a surgical operation could improve my condition. I had some of the very best surgeons and physicians in Maine, Connecticut, and New York City, and the doctors who attended me at the birth of my child, offered me a free bed in one of New York's best hospitals, if I would but submit to the knife, of which I had a perfect horror. Hoping and praying that something would be found in materia medica which would reach my case, I was continually searching out new remedies and methods of cure; continually taking medicine and always growing worse.
The nurse who was with me at the time, and who had been in constant attendance upon me for five years, said she could not give me another dose of a powerful drug which I had been taking for five weeks to produce sleep. Then in this extremity, which was God's opportunity, I asked that a Christian Science practitioner be called, and my family did not oppose it, though they had no faith in it. Never will I forget my practitioner's kind words as he entered my room, or the sweet peace which came over me during that first silent treatment. Only those who have been healed through the power of divine Love can know or feel that peace "which passeth all understanding." My rest and sleep was beautiful that night. I had felt and responded to the truth which makes free. In two weeks I was out and able to attend the Wednesday evening meetings; in three months every physical ill had vanished and I found myself healed. Later it was my blessed privilege to receive class instruction from my practitioner, who all the time has pointed out the true way to me so lovingly and patiently that I owe him endless gratitude.
