A silent, peaceful prayer of thanksgiving rose from my heart to heaven when I heard the first reading from Science and Health in our late Thanksgiving service: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (Pref. p. 7).
Since that day, I have had the ardent desire to tell my brethren in the old home in Germany what a rich blessing the comprehension of this new-old truth has brought us.
I shall never forget the day when, on returning home, I found my wife entirely healed through Christian Science. She seemed to be slowly slipping away. For years she had been unable to eat meat, vegetables, or fruit, because she suffered from cramps at night. Finally she could eat nothing but a few spoonfuls of some prepared food. Yet more severe than this bodily suffering was the mental struggle within her. She greatly longed to attend to her household duties and watch over the 'education of her children, but her illness would not permit it. She was examined by several physicians, and while on a visit in Europe she was treated by a specialist, but without receiving any lasting benefit. As a last resort, she determined to go to a hospital in Portland, Ore. A few days before her intended departure, I had to start on a long journey. While visiting an old friend in Portland he begged me to try Christian Science for her. I wrote to my wife, telling her to choose for herself. We had never before heard of Christian Science, but God led us with His guiding hand, and when I returned home one week later, I found her entirely healed.
