ABIDING IN TRUTH

From the February 1904 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE renowned Mars' Hill orator in his second letter to Timothy, tells us that "Every scripture inspired of God, is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness" (Revised Version). And in his epistle to the Romans, Paul counsels his hearers to "let God be true, and every man a liar." A careful study of this admonition brings out much that is "helpful for teaching, for refuting error, for giving guidance, and for training others in the path of duty; so that a godlike man may be perfect himself, and perfectly equipped for every good action" (2 Timothy, 3:16, 17, Twentieth Century Edition).

Let God be true! What significance has this command for us? We learn from the teachings of Jesus, from the Apostles, and again through Science and Health, that God is Love, Spirit, Life, good. The Century Dictionary defines the word true, as meaning sure, unfailing; and the word let, as allow to remain or abide. To remain or abide in the conviction that Love is sure, unfailing, destroys the belief of any truth or reality in hatred, malice, resentment, or revenge. God is Love. "Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not."

To remain or abide in the consciousness of the sure, unfailing reality of Spirit must dispel the belief of any truth or intelligence in matter or the flesh, which is the opposite of Spirit. "For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other."
