I have already given to the Field some of the reasons...

From the July 1904 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I have already given to the Field some of the reasons why I am trying to be a Christian Scientist, and for the double purpose of expressing my gratitude for what Christian Science has done and is doing for me; and as an encouragement to those who may be seeking freedom and peace, I desire to bear further testimony to the fact that this truth does regenerate and elevate mankind.

In the proportion that we learn and acknowledge our relationship to God, the things of the world lose their charm, we gain a grasp on things eternal, and come into our rightful heritage of abiding peace and joy and rest. I have learned that Christian Science pays dividends from the first hour, and in my experience of about six and a half years it has never failed when honestly applied. I had grown weary of the world's so-called pleasures, as well as its pains and disappointments, and on turning to Christian Science I willingly gave up all the pleasure the world had ever offered me.

I was reared by religious parents, and during my early years was a regular attendant at orthodox churches. While I never questioned, and do not now question, the sincerity and honesty of purpose of the ministers who preach the gospel as they see it, their presentation of it never appealed to me, and eventually I refused even to think of God, for the reason that He seemed unknowable and unapproachable. In accordance with the teachings of Christian Science, I am now striving to make God my daily companion, and to know Him as my best friend, my guide, and my protector.
