It is sometimes argued by those who misunderstand the teachings of our text-book, that Christian Science is not the truth, because it rests upon and proceeds from no fixed, underlying basis. Christian Scientists, on the other hand, contend that Christian Science is the truth and that it rests upon and proceeds from demonstrable Principle, and therefore answers the question, What is Truth? It may be well therefore to show wherein the answer of Christian Science to this question differs from that of all others.
In its explanation of the question, What is truth ? atheism rests wholly upon the evidences of the material senses to establish its basis. These senses bear testimony first of all to the reality of matter, its indestructible nature as substance. They further report that matter changes its form, and when analyzed is found to be composed of an infinite number of minute particles, atoms, which may be regarded either as infinitely divisible and elastic, or as reaching a limit of divisibility. These senses still further report that atoms have weight and are centers of physical and chemical forces.
Material sense testimony also reports that matter tends to organize itself and bring forth vegetable and animal life. It declares that matter's atomic activities result in structure and form, cell-life and tissue. Relying upon these evidences as true, the inorganic mineral is regarded as having passed through the changes, described by such words as germination, nutrition, reproduction, growth, etc., until it finally becomes conscious, manifesting memory, intelligence. Every mental endowment is therefore explained as resting upon and proceeding from matter.
