"He opened to us the Scriptures". As my eye fell upon these words recently, my thought turned from the two whom Jesus had helped as they walked toward Emmaus, to the present day, and as I realized how our Leader has opened the Scriptures to us, my heart was filled with a deeper sense of gratitude than ever, and I wish to express it by adding my testimony to that of the multitude of those who have found health, and a true concept of God and man through Mrs. Eddy's teachings. Four years ago I turned to Christian Science for physical help, after having "suffered many things of many physicians" in the effort to obtain health. When I left my home in southern Wisconsin to come to Chicago for treatment, I knew almost nothing of Christian Science and had so little faith in it that I directed the nurse who accompanied me, to telephone to the nearest hospital for an ambulance, and to take me to the hospital instead of to a Christian Science practitioner, if I collapsed on the way to the city. My religion had been such a source of comfort and happiness to me that I had no wish to change my thought on that subject, desiring nothing but physical help from Christian Science.
Week after week of patient work by an experienced practitioner, seemed to produce little result, until at the end of five weeks of study of the Bible, Science and Health, and other Christian Science literature, I could repeat with understanding the scientific statement of being, which begins, "There is no life, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All in all" (Science and Health, p. 468). My practitioner told me then that I did not need another treatment, and to my surprise, I found that I was well, and that I could meet and overcome whatever presented itself in the shape of physical ills.
How thankful I am that my healing was delayed until my eyes were opened to the truth that Jesus came to teach —the truth that frees us from sin, sickness, and death. Though I had to cast behind me many old beliefs, some of them dearly cherished ones, and though there have been times when the journey from sense to Soul has seemed to lead through rugged paths, yet the knowledge that I have found Truth has been a beacon light in the darkest hours, and my heart overflows with gratitude for the blessings that have come to me through Christian Science.
