"HITHERTO HATH THE LORD HELPED US"

From the August 1905 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Hitherto," and on forever
Towers the mighty One, our Rock;
Flows His love, a peaceful river
For His seeking, thirsty flock.

"Fear thou not, for I will help thee!"
Clear and sweet the promise rings;
Dark despair cannot enfold me,
Hope renewed its paean sings.

Hitherto! God never changes
Standing by us day by day
Where grim sorrow's mountain ranges
Lift their peaks in dark array.

"Hitherto! through all the ages
His unerring hand, full fraught
Holds for us the years' rich pages—
Awed, we read, "What hath God wrought!"

"Hitherto the Lord hath helped us,"
He is helping, holding now—
Not a sparrow falls unheeded
Dearer than a sparrow, thou.

Jesus said, Thou always hearest!
He, our Father, hears our cry
In The darkest hour is nearest,—
Are we trustful, drawing nigh?

"Be not faithless, but believing!"
Doubting Thomas, learn thy way;
Ne'er is Father-love deceiving
Conquerors we through Love for aye.
