Testimonies of Healing

It seems as if I could not go on accepting the blessings...

From the May 1907 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It seems as if I could not go on accepting the blessings which have come to me through an understanding of Christian Science without sending in my testimony to the power of divine Love. From childhood, until gaining an understanding of Christian Science, I was in bondage to many physical and mental troubles, but through the power of Truth I was made free. My husband, who had chronic bowel trouble for twenty-five years, has been healed, and our eldest son, who was so frail from babyhood until the age of six that we had little hope of raising him, is now a sturdy youth. The most wonderful demonstrations, however, have been made with our youngest son. We are told that "a little child shall lead them," and surely it has been so with us. Our little one had a severe cough, and although a physician did all in his power to help him, the child grew worse and we were asked to get a nurse. We did so, but she soon told us that the boy could not live until morning. I knew very little about Christian Science, but my husband had heard a lecture on the subject a short time before, and when the nurse said that the child must die, my husband asked if there was a Christian Science practitioner in town, and upon learning that there was we soon had him with us. An hour later my baby was taking nourishment, the first in three days, and in two hours was sitting in my lap, playing and talking in his baby fashion. That was seven years ago. After this proof of God's love we knew we had communed with Truth, and for six weeks everything became secondary to the reading and searching of the Bible and Science and Health. Gradually its truth dawned for us, and we realized with Paul that we were free born.

Another evidence of the omnipotence of good was given in what was to me a most marvelous demonstration over accident. Some time ago our little son (who will soon be eight years old) was going to a neighbor's across the way. A horse was tied out in our yard, and without thinking of danger the child ran directly behind the horse, which kicked him in the face. We heard his cries and ran to him, but the sight that met my eyes seemed more than I could bear. His face was terribly cut, one eye especially being in a dreadful condition. There were a number of other cuts, and the flow of blood was alarming. As I took the child up in my arms I heard his little voice declaring, "God is my Life, mamma; God is Love." As I laid him on the couch he seemed to yield to mortal sense, for as he sank down on the pillow he said faintly, "I guess I am killed, mamma."

The other children were frightened, but I told them that there is no death, for God is Life, and asked them to telephone for my husband and a Christian Science friend. Presently I heard the little voice again declaring the truth, and I cried aloud, "Father, I thank Thee for this demonstration," for I knew death was robbed of its would-be victim. Then came my friend and my husband, with such words of love and cheer that the human need of strength was met, and I was enabled to unsee that terrible mental picture. The face was badly swollen for about an hour, when this subsided; alarming conditions which threatened were overcome, and there was no fever, no inflammation, and no discoloration whatever.
