In gratitude to God for perfect health, after having been raised by Him, through Christian Science, from what I and my physicians and friends supposed to be my deathbed, I wish to give, through the Journal, the following facts: In July, 1905, while living in Wichita, Kan., I was taken severely ill with what the physician pronounced inflammation of the bowels. Five times I went through an operation for this; then it was decided by the physicians to be a neglected case of appendicitis. Later I was attacked by a fever, and still later by acute lung trouble. A terrible cough set in about three weeks after my first attack, accompanied by alarming symptoms. About three months after my first illness, abscesses began to form in my back.
While in the West I had been under the care of four physicians, and at this time they advised removal to my home in Rochester. N. Y., as they had no hope of my recovery. I was brought home on a bed, and during the next six months I was under the care of five physicians of this city. I had now lain in one position for twelve months. There were seventeen openings in my back, discharging constantly, and the physicians said there was also an internal affection of the bowels, besides a most serious conition of the lungs. My weight was greatly reduced, and at the time a Christian Scientist was called to take the case I was not able to retain any food. I bad lain so long with my leg drawn up that it bad become locked in that position, while my fingers were so stiff that I could not close my hands. I was kept under the influence of an opiate to allay the pain, and my death was expected every day. At one time I lay unconscious for nearly an hour.
In about five weeks after I began to take Christian Science treatment I was able to sit up a little. In about two months, when I had begun to go out, so as to be weighed, there was a marked gain in weight. It is now over two and a half years since I began Christian Science treatment; I am perfectly well, and weigh over one hundred and seventy pounds. I give these facts, hoping that they may be the means of bringing to other hopeless sufferers the joy of life and health restored through the understanding of Christ in Christian Science.
