Before we heard of Christian Science my husband and I had struggled for years with sorrow and care. My husband had become completely discouraged and did not dare any longer to hope for an improvement of the conditions, but as a last effort to find help and comfort we turned to Christian Science upon the advice of acquaintances of ours. Before we came to Christian Science my little daughter had been taken with a severe cough. We went immediately to a physician, who prescribed various remedies, but the cough did not yield; indeed, the physician said we ought to be very careful about leaving the child in the cold or in the draft, as he feared a serious result.
In the Christian Science Wednesday evening meetings we had heard much about God's great love, and my husband and I therefore became convinced that God alone could help us, and we asked a Christian Science practitioner in Dresden for help. She declared the truth for us that very evening, and when we came home we carried our little daughter to her bed, though it was in a cold room, as we had heard in the meeting that God surrounds us everywhere, and that we may breathe the atmosphere of divine Love in every place. The child slept beautifully all night and did not even cough, and in two days the cough had completely disappeared. Our son had been afflicted for years with a serious affection of the throat. The remedies prescribed by the physician were very disagreeable, but since coming to Christian Science we have naturally made some changes in the way of bringing up our children. I have told them that divine Love protects them always and in every way, and one night, when the boy was going to bed, he said that his throat was very painful. I asked him if he wished to use the old remedy, but he said, "No, mother; I shall go to bed without that; God will help me." The next morning he came into my room radiant, saying, "I have no more pain in my throat; God was with me all night." The inflammation was gone entirely.
These glorious things which we are experiencing have made my husband feel quite young again. The sadness, discontent, and ill humor to which he was subject have left him completely; he has become happy, cheerful, and contented, and does his work joyfully, as he knows that God is with him. I myself used to have an excitable, discontented disposition, from which my husband and children have had much to suffer, and the children have often got undeserved punishment; but this fault too has disappeared. We thank God constantly for the recognition of the truth. We also thank our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the establishment of the German Wednesday evening meetings, as they bring us the proof of the practical application of God's word through the beautiful testimonies which one may hear at these meetings. We are likewise sincerely grateful for having been helped along by explanations of the truth, and we are also grateful to the clear friends who directed us to Christian Science.
