Testimonies of Healing

For some twelve years before becoming interested in...

From the November 1909 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For some twelve years before becoming interested in Christian Science I had worn glasses. I had put them on originally to overcome severe pain in my eyes whenever I tried to read by artificial light. Two or three times, during these twelve years, this pain had returned, and my eyes were reexamined and fitted with new glasses. About five years ago it seemed to be necessary for me to have my glasses changed again, since I could not read for more than fifteen minutes without great pain. It was suggested that instead of going to an oculist I try Christian Science, and I decided to do this without telling my wife of the plan, for I knew she was bitterly opposed to what she thought Christian Science to be.

It so happened that at this time our baby of eighteen months had been suffering with an obstinate bowel complaint which two physicians had been unable to check, and various changes of medicine made it seem as if their well meant efforts were really experimental. This had been going on for nearly two months, and one day in despair my wife dismissed the physician then in attendance and sought Christian Science help for the baby without telling me of her intention, having good reason to believe that I would not approve of her action. Our baby was, however, completely healed in a few days, and this brought about a mutual confession as to Christian Science. In a short time I was enabled to leave off my glasses, and I have not had them on since.

For some years I had known something of Christian Science; that is, I had attended many meetings, and had read part of the text-book in a haphazard sort of way. I had made up my mind that Christian Science was vague and irrational; that Christian Scientists were visionaries, and that I had too much common sense to be fooled by it; but this experience with my baby and myself caused both my wife and me to turn seriously to this Science which we had heretofore despised and rejected. In my own case the belief of self-righteousness was somewhat slow to yield, but I am learning now that, as St. Paul says, "the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God." I am also learning, even though slowly, to "stand porter at the door of thought" (Science and Health, p. 39)and I am trying to see reflected in my fellow-man only our Father's image.
