He is our Father! Yet how oft
We close our eyes in fear,
Forgetful that by day and night,
His guardian care is near.
He is our Father; Then indeed
His love must answer every need!
And if perchance my straying feet
Should tread the shadowy vale,
My heart shall still be unafraid,
My courage shall not fail.
Through all this earthly pilgrimage
Each day has known His care,
Then why should chilling doubt arise
Lest He forsake me there?
Nor night nor death can bring me ill—
His rod and staff shall cheer:
He is our Father! thus my heart
Shall silence every fear!
In peace I lay me down to sleep:
The Father's love is sure and deep!
