Testimonies of Healing

[Translated from the German]

It is with a heart full of gratitude...

From the November 1912 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is with a heart full of gratitude to our heavenly Father that I wish to testify to the great blessings which have come to me through Christian Science. Some four years ago, soon after returning from a ten-mile walk during which we were caught in a heavy rain and drenched to the skin, I experienced a severe pain in the abdomen. The condition became unbearable as time went on, and we appealed to a physician, who after an examination advised an operation, which he declared to be a small matter and one which could be performed through natural channels. I consented to this, but later on was told that three different organs had been removed. During the following year and a half, I was an invalid, and obliged to spend the greater part of the time in bed. Two other physicians, whom my husband consulted later, advised a second operation, but it was plain to us that while an operation had almost ruined my health, which up to that time had been normal, a second operation could but reduce me still more.

I lost faith in the skill of the physicians, and treated myself according to what I read in books on the sanative power of nature. We then went to Germany, where for a year all kinds of treatment were resorted to. I then returned to Vancouver, and the trouble which seemed to have been suppressed returned, so that I could only leave my bed temporarily. We now decided to turn for help to the Christian Science church, of which we had heard quite a good deal while in Germany, and I applied for treatment to a local practitioner. She explained to me that the body has no life of its own, but that God who is Love, and good, and who therefore cannot possibly send evil of any kind upon us, is Life; hence that everything which is unlike God, including all disease, is error. This seemed plain to me, and I soon experienced the power of the truth. Whereas my first drive to the practitioner's had been accompanied by suffering, I was able to walk home, and with a few more treatments was entirely restored. Since then I have devoted much of my time to the reading of Science and Health and Der Herald der Christian Science, thus becoming more and more enlightened by the understanding that God, our creator, is Life, and that "in him we live, and move, and have our being."

Through the dawning of this recognition my whole life has been changed. Whereas formerly I used to be depressed and rather irritable in disposition, today I experience a sense of contentment and happiness. I am grateful for the blessings which have come to me through the teachings of Christian Science, and there is no doubt in my mind that all men will sooner or later become convinced of its truth.—
