With the hope that some one may be freed from the dreadful bondage of the tobacco habit, I desire to make public acknowledgment of my healing through the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Some eight years ago, while on my way to work at a West Side factory, I became unconscious, falling against a tree and thence to the sidewalk. On being partially revived I was sent home with a prescription in my pocket for epilepsy, but the neighborhood druggist would hardly believe it possible that I was suffering from such a cause and refused to fill the prescription.
Though still in my teens, tobacco had undermined my health so that the falling spells were frequent. My folks said the convulsions were terrible to look at and begged me to stop using tobacco. Finally a conference with the family doctor got me into such a frame of mind that for a year I lived in mortal fear, earnestly trying with all my heart to stop. Any one who has had this habit, or any other, can appreciate the effort involved in trying to overcome it by will-power. This finally gave way, and error again prevailed, resulting in another spell, which occurred while staying at a sister's home in the West, where I had gone for a change. Shortly after returning to Indianapolis, Science and Health was given to me, and before reading very far the chain of habit was broken and fell away, leaving a wonderful sense of relief and peace in its place. There was no vacant space for want of the old habit,—the new understanding had given me an entirely different outlook. At the same time the need of glasses, worn for five years, was overcome. This was three or four years ago.
To show my real gratitude it is my prayer to become daily more worthy of the name Christian Scientist, in deed as well as in word.—Indianapolis, Ind.
