CHRISTIAN SCIENCE is teaching the world that spiritually right thinking will establish right and abolish wrong in human affairs. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 534 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "The Son of the Virgin-mother unfolded the remedy for Adam, or error;" and every thinker must admit that the right thinking which animated Christ Jesus, the highest ethical thinking and teaching the world has ever known, would be, if practically applied, the logical remedy for evil of every kind.
Ignorant, mistaken, and destructive thinking of one kind and another precedes, either consciously or unconsciously, directly or indirectly, all outward evil. Righteous desire, integrity, and industry foster all the good we do and see. Christian Science teaches us that selfish or fearful thinking, material thought, habits of all kinds, including the educated beliefs in material conditions concerning disease, induce physical sickness and trouble, and that divine Mind reflected in spiritual understanding minimizes, as fast as it appears, not only sorrow and sin, but the menace and discord of bodily suffering as well. Why not? If general and personal belief in the supposed laws of sickness is at the root of sick experiences, and individual reflection of spiritual understanding explains away and so silences the erroneous point of view, then the knowledge of God and His laws is the right and only remedy for disease and accident and pain, even as it is the saving grace for heartache or sin.
Should we entertain a doubt that Christ Jesus "unfolded the remedy" for the error of sickness as well as for the error of sin, a fair look at the record of his work in the four gospels will silence it. There we see that he unfolded all that constitutes godlikeness in man; and that both sin and sickness—yes, and death— fled away as his pure, true spiritual thinking about God and man appeared. His works proved him possessed of true healing capacity; his teaching revealed the nature of it. Spiritual understanding derived from God, the direct expression of the divine nature as counteracting all human nature,—this was his remedy for all human woe. Simple and sure, because it cleansed mentally, at the root; direct, because it worked with the individual, his divine method so succeeded that men have called his works miracles. Now Christian Science reveals the Principle, law, and rule of his works, and reinforces and carries on Christian healing in its entirety.
