Testimonies of Healing

Shortly after Christian Science...

From the April 1915 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Shortly after Christian Science came into my life, I had a very practical demonstration of the healing power of Truth. On my way to attend a Thanksgiving service at First Church, London, I was hurrying to catch a train running into a district station, when I fell from the top step. On regaining consciousness I found myself supported by the station officials and declaring aloud "the scientific statement of being," though in great pain. I was assisted into the station-master's room and he wanted to send for a doctor, but I asked to be left alone. The pain was so great and my experience in Christian Science so small that I could only cling to the table and audibly voice the truth. I also tried to realize that there is no reality in pain, because it is not of God.

I gradually became somewhat composed, and in less than half an hour I was able to hobble across the platform into the train, which took me within a short distance of the church. This distance I managed to walk, all the time declaring that "there is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind" (Science and Health, p.468). On entering the church I asked for help from the lady beside me, telling her I had fallen and was in pain. This help was given immediately, and very shortly a sense of quiet peace and of the ever-presence of Christ, Truth, came to me. By the time the preliminary part of the service was over and the reader announced the meeting open for testimonies, all pain had gone. I was able to stand up immediately, and gratefully give thanks for this practical proof of Christian Science teaching.

The following day, Sunday, I attended the Christian Science service near my home. On Monday I put in a full day's work, walking for nearly seven hours. Later I found that the whole of my left side was badly bruised, though I had had no pain from it; but as the discoloration did not disappear for over three weeks this clearly shows that my fall was severe. Some years before this experience, I had hurt the same foot in a less serious accident and the insurance company paid me for six weeks' disablement; but this time I made no claim.
