Testimonies of Healing

In 1912 I was suddenly attacked...

From the October 1916 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In 1912 I was suddenly attacked with a severe case of peritonitis while confined to bed with kidney trouble. The physicians in charge held a consultation and sent me to a hospital, where an operation was performed. After remaining there three months I was removed to my home, where I was confined to bed two months longer. During these five months the physicians administered frequent hypodermic injections of morphine to relieve intense pain. This treatment, however, proved too severe, so another opiate was given. At this point a habit was formed which rapidly threatened to wreck my life, and at the time Christian Science found me I was daily consuming a quantity of the opiate equivalent to seventy times the usual amount. The physician also stated that owing to my physical condition there was not one chance in ten of my surviving the means ordinarily employed to effect a cure under materiel medica.

About this time my husband's business was transferred to Oakland, Cal., and my mother having solicited me to take up the study of Christian Science, I there engaged a practitioner; but only a few treatments had been received when we were again transferred, this time to Colorado Springs, Col. The treatments received in Oakland had served to heighten my interest in this healing truth, so after our arrival in Colorado Springs the aid of another practitioner was at once secured. The struggle between truth and error seemed long and at times unavailing, but divine Love triumphed. Through the continued study of Christian Science and the application of Truth, the false habit was finally and completely destroyed, as from the day of my healing I have never had the slightest desire for the drug. I am thankful for the protracted healing, because through it greater spiritual understanding has been gained. Other ailments have likewise been overcome, the most troublesome of which were night sweats and chronic appendicitis.

In our home we have had many proofs of the healing power and the omnipresence of God, and Christian Science has been our only physician during the last few years. In a time of great sorrow we found it indeed the Comforter, and it is to me truly the coming anew of the Christ. My heart is filled with gratitude to God for "his wonderful works to the children of men," and words cannot express my profound appreciation and love for Mrs. Eddy in her efforts and sacrifices necessary to the unfoldment of this truth to the understanding of mankind. My heart also goes out to those who cheered me along this seemingly dark and devious way to the light of healing.
