LAW

From the November 1916 issue of The Christian Science Journal

No one has seen so clearly as our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, the necessity of Christian Scientists becoming a law to themselves. Her frequent admonitions in this direction are almost startling in their insistency, and it may be well to consider what their import implies. On page 442 of Science and Health she says, "Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake."

All people in all ages who have believed in a Supreme Being whom they have called God, have also believed that His will was law; but because of their misconceptions in regard to the Lawgiver, their beliefs in regard to His laws have been equally mistaken. Christian Science with its illuminating revelation has come to rescue the world from this ignorance, and it shows that no concept of God can be true unless it be perfect. From this follows the necessary consequent that from a perfect Lawgiver there can proceed only perfect laws.

Christian Science also reveals the glorious fact that God is Mind; therefore divine Mind must be the Lawgiver, and all the thoughts of that Mind must exist by reason of, must be maintained and governed by, the law of that Mind. This indicates that everything which really exists, must exist because of the law of the one infinite Mind; hence all knowledge of existence must be comprised in the understanding of God and His laws. There is nothing then of greater importance to the Christian Scientist than to win an understanding of what God's laws and their operation really include.
