When "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was placed in my hands, I was helpless and hopeless, unable even to turn myself in bed, where I had lain for six years suffering from what was described as a spinal complaint. A district nurse attended me daily, and at stated intervals the medical officer of the Board of Guardians examined me. This board was giving me a weekly allowance on account of my helplessness and my inability to earn a living.
Four doctors had examined me at different times, and had said I would never walk again. Neuralgia, headaches, biliousness, bowel trouble, fainting attacks, and sleeplessness added to my suffering. How I longed for a little rest; but weary nights and sorrowful days seemed to be my portion, until a kind practitioner told me of Christian Science treatment and thus brought to me the first ray of hope. Being so tired of pain and suffering, I was ready to accept the truth, and with the first treatment the sleeplessness was overcome. I went to sleep about ten o'clock, and imagine my joy on awaking at six o'clock in the morning, after a comfortable night, feeling rested and refreshed.
Then came freedom from the stomach disorder. I now eat anything that is set before me. The other ailments have likewise disappeared. The spinal trouble was the last to yield, and at times discouragement would creep in, despite the fact that I had been healed of the other ills. At such times I would get Science and Health and read the first words of the Preface, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings." Then turning to the Bible I would read, "What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." I leaned on the promise, and now can truthfully say there is not a vestige of the old complaint.
