Testimonies of Healing

A little over two years ago I had...

From the June 1916 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A little over two years ago I had become literally mired in materialism. As a natural result, I had troubles without end, and the doctor was never absent for long from our house. A graduate of a well-known college and a student by nature, I had steeped myself in the wisdom of this world, my favorite subjects being the natural sciences, especially biology and the search for the origin of life. I had lost all interest in religion as taught in the churches, for it was to me utterly impractical and inconsistent, so I had evolved a religion of my own in which the Supreme Being was an inflexible law, terrible in judgment upon those who tried to resist.

Finally, in spite of my protests, my wife turned to Christian Science for relief from nervous troubles and was greatly benefited, so much so that I urged her to keep on. But I had little use even then for Science so far as I was concerned. Later, while on a visit to friends in a distant city, I was taken with a severe cold and knew from experience that I was due to have acute lung trouble. Our hostess knew something of Christian Science and urged me to give it a trial, saying that God could heal me. ' and that she would give me treatment. That was the first time the subject had been put to me in that way, and it seemed perfectly reasonable; for I had not lost faith in a Supreme Being but had only arrived at a false concept of Him. So I consented to have treatment, and the next morning, though not feeling much better and in spite of the fact that I had been in a raging fever all night, I went on a business trip instead of staying in bed, and rode several hundred miles on a railway motor-car, much of the time not caring whether I was able to stay on or not. That night I went to bed as soon as possible, and fell asleep almost at once, awaking in about an hour and a half entirely well.

From that day to this I have used no medicine but divine Mind, and neither has my wife nor my young daughter. We have found it all sufficient for every purpose. Whereas we used to be in constant dread of sickness, the future, even of God, we now have a sense of security never thought possible before; and whereas we once had one of the best stocked medicine closets in the city, there is now no such thing as a drug in the house.
