When Christian Science found me in July, 1909, I was in a hospital in Kansas City, Kan., suffering from what numerous physicians said was chronic Bright's disease, with distressing complications. I had gone there for an operation, but when the incision was made the conditions were found to be very serious, and on the fourth day after the operation I had a hemorrhage from the wound, losing much blood. The doctors did not think I was conscious, and they told the nurses and my sister who was staying there with me that I was dying. They said it would be impossible for me to recover.
However, my sister, being interested in Christian Science, called a practitioner, who lovingly took up treatment. I remained at the hospital two months, because the wound had to be dressed two or three times a day. The doctors said a further operation was necessary, but I was unwilling to undergo it, for no hope of recovery was held out, and I went home much against the doctor's wishes. I went to the office regularly for a month and they kept urging me to return to the hospital to have the operation, so I was told by the practitioner that I must choose between Science and materia medica. My people finally consented to my having Science entirely, although I had taken no medicine while at the hospital, as I was told it would not reach my case. There was much opposition to Christian Science, however, on the part of my family, and I was so lacking in spiritual understanding that the demonstration was not made. After ten months we returned home to California, where I had a relapse and we called other physicians. All of them told me the wound would never heal; nevertheless an X-ray examination showed that both kidneys were in their proper place and in a normal condition.
Now I knew nothing but the truth as taught, in Christian Science had done this, so I returned to my study of Christian Science in earnest. I had the assurance that all things could be made new, and that it was the same saving truth which Jesus taught and left us as our rich heritage, as our dear Leader tells us in Science and Health. It was four years before my healing was complete. I had several practitioners, but the last one found that I was entertaining resentment against the doctors who had performed the operation. She told me this must be cast out of my consciousness and be replaced by love, as I could not receive the blessing of perfect healing while entertaining hatred toward a brother. The incision soon closed and my healing was complete. Only a slight scar remains. The healing occurred a year ago, and I am enjoying perfect health, attending to my household duties with never any discomfort.
