I have been so abundantly blessed since taking up the study of Christian Science that I desire to share some of this good with others. Words cannot express my gratitude, but I would like to relate a few of the experiences that have proven to us so satisfyingly the healing power of Truth. My husband and I started to read Science and Health at the same time, and from the first perusal of that wonderful book there has been a change for the better along every line. I did not need physical healing, but I surely needed to be healed of unbelief and ignorance about God. I find that as I am faithful and hold thought to all that is good, the old man is put off and the new man is put on. The reading of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," created a desire to know about the Bible, as I very soon saw that I would have to know more about it in order to understand and appreciate Mrs. Eddy's writings. I now study the Bible daily, and find comfort and instruction in its pages.
In the summer of 1914 our baby was healed of a serious bowel trouble. On the basis of sense-testimony, it looked like a losing fight at one time; but with the help of a faithful Christian Science practitioner, and by knowing that "one on God's side is a majority," we found that Truth is indeed the "strong deliverer" (Science and Health, p. 226), for in three weeks the baby was perfectly restored.
Another experience proved very conclusively that "the word of God is quick, and powerful." Our little son, two years old, was one day playing in the yard alone, when suddenly he began to scream without any apparent cause. I hurried out to him, mentally declaring that God was there and nothing could harm the child. When I reached him he held up his hand, and I saw that a hornet was hanging to one of his fingers. Instantly the Bible narrative came to me about Paul and the viper, and how "he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm." On page 243 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says it was divine Love that "made harmless the poisonous viper." I had to slap at the hand several times before the hornet let go, and when I carried the boy into the house he was writhing so that I could scarcely hold him. I at once began to read Science and Health to him, and he soon stopped crying and lay quietly in my arms, listening. Within a few minutes I was called away, and when I returned he was playing and as happy as ever. My mother, who was with me at the time, examined the hand and not a trace of swelling or discoloration was found.
