The three years during which I have been interested in Christian Science have been the happiest of my life. I realize how much I have to be thankful for when I think of my condition as I lay on what would undoubtedly have been my death-bed if it had not been for the truth that makes free. From childhood I was always taking medicine, but while I am thankful for the physical healing I have experienced, I am more grateful for the spiritual uplift.
I did not turn to God until all material means had been tried. Our family physician was kind and patient, but his earnest efforts to relieve me were vain. We went to another physician, but he despaired of ever being able to help me, and said the only hope was a change of climate. I was a physical wreck, suffering from a skin disease, catarrh, chronic stomach disorder, curvature of the spine, throat and lung trouble, severe headaches, also weak eyes, for which I was wearing glasses. I never expected to be well again. Life seemed a misery and death an enemy I could not escape, although at times I almost wished for the end.
I went to southern California, and the first eight months there seemed to benefit me, but. before the second year had drawn to a close my condition was worse than when I left home, for all hope of being healed by a change of climate had left me and a feeling of melancholy had taken its place. On the advice of a physician, from whom I had been taking treatment without avail for three months, I went to a mountain resort for the summer. After a few days of camp life I became violently ill and for a week was not able to take any nourishment or to sleep much. It was then proved to me that it is darkest just before dawn, for when my condition was such that perhaps one more day would have brought the end, I asked for a Christian Science practitioner, and in two days I was up.
