In May, 1906, when I had reached...

From the October 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In May, 1906, when I had reached the end of my physical and mental endurance, and after all known resources had been exhausted in an effort to find the true God, Christian Science was presented to me by one whom I had known only a few days, and a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was loaned to me. I began to read the book with such a satisfied feeling, and from the first knew I had found that for which my heart had so yearned, though I did not know that it contained any healing virtue. After reading most of the time for the next three days, however, I was completely healed. This experience was a wonderful revelation of the truth to me, as I had not known anything about Christian Science, and it filled me with a joy and peace such as I had never experienced until this time.

I had been reared in a Christian home and identified with a church for many years, and had talked much of God's goodness to me, but had never before really known Him. Instead of a desire to talk of my great joy, there was a quietness which was new to me. My heart rejoiced constantly, and I praised God for His goodness, for I was free. From a human standpoint my case had been considered hopeless. I had grown up in the belief that I could not escape tile law of heredity and must succumb to tubercular disease of the lungs, as all of my family had passed on with that disease. At an early age the looked for condition appeared, accompanied by many complications, including facial paralysis and heart trouble. There were also many unhappy conditions in the home, but one by one these have all yielded to the power of Truth.

With the physical healing there was no convalescent stage; the healing was accomplished by the first touch of Truth, and even the remembrance of the day-dream of suffering and sorrow vanished. It seems to me that no one has greater reason to be grateful for Christian Science than I have. It furnished me with absolute proof of the Science of Christianity with its "signs following," for the healing came entirely through the reading of Science and Health. For this indisputable evidence of the healing efficacy of Christian Science I owe an everlasting debt of gratitude to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, the one who was ready to receive the message of "on earth peace, good will toward men," and to give it to the world in such a way that all may know for a certainty that the Christ, Truth, is in the earth today, and all may find who will.—
