Last summer I was healed through Christian Science of what one physician termed a nervous breakdown and what another could not or did not name; but both recommended a change of climate, so I went to the home of relatives in Maine. Soon after reaching there, however, I felt just as bad as when I was in the West,—could not sleep, had pains in the head, and all the old troubles that had caused me to go East.
When my sister-in-law, who is a Scientist, asked me whether I wished to send for a physician or to try Christian Science, I decided on the latter. A practitioner was asked to treat me, and I began conscientiously to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. As a result, twice during the summer I went to Boston in an automobile,—a distance of over one hundred and fifty miles,—quite a strenuous trip for a person who at the middle of June was unable to walk a block alone. I attended services at The Mother Church many times, also at the branch church in Maine where I was visiting, and was inspired and helped with each service. In October I returned to the West, and the first of the following months resumed my work in a busy law office.
Another opportunity to demonstrate what even the meager knowledge gained from four months' reading and study could do, was given me on my way from Maine to Oklahoma,—a three days journey. I had never before traveled any great distance without being train sick and without carrying some material remedy in case of emergency. This time instead of the usual medicine I had Science and Health and other Christian Science literature with me. I was not sick for a moment, though I ate just the same as if I were not traveling. I can truly say this summer was the happiest of my life, instead of being the most miserable. The spiritual uplift is of far greater benefit to me than the physical healing, for with the former comes the peace which makes the latter possible.
