It was not for the physical healing that I came to Christian Science. There was one memorable day in my life when a prayer went out from my heart with a yearning I had never before experienced, asking for the truth to be revealed as God, the source of truth, would have me know it; and this desire remained with me until I was led into Christian Science, when I felt that it had been answered.
I read the literature faithfully for over a year. Then in the summer of 1915 I was obliged to ask for help, as there was a condition which did not seem to improve. Since childhood I had been on the verge of a decline, and this condition was aggravated by grief. The various troubles were quickly overcome. My teeth, which were rough, yellow, and disfigured through lack of enamel, became white and smooth, and the gums, which had receded until the roots of the teeth were exposed, grew into place; a decayed tooth became strong and white, and a tumor which had formed on the gum dissolved and passed away. Since treatment in Christian Science I have gained in weight, and have never felt so well.
Wonderful as the physical healing is, it cannot be compared with the joy of an awakened spiritual understanding of God as Life, divine Love. Now the reading of Science and Health helps me, and when reading the different works of our Leader I have sometimes lost myself in the "maturing conception" (Miscellany, p. 181) of the new heaven and the new earth. The fear to say "Thy will be done" is changed to joy, as Christian Science reveals God's will as being the source of health, strength, and happiness, instead of sickness or sorrow, as I had been taught. Christian Science has satisfied a long felt want. The sense of lack has been entirely overcome, and I have become conscious of the fact that supply is spiritual. My hair has always been too oily,—a condition supposedly inherited from my father,—but it has dried up, leaving the scalp healthy and the hair soft and fluffy. Since having treatment in Science my capabilities have more than doubled.
