Christian Science means a great...

From the August 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science means a great deal to me,—more than can be expressed in words. It was over a rough and rugged road that I came looking for the truth, for something that would meet my needs every day in the year. I could get no help from the old teaching of a finite Deity who sat on a throne. It was evident to me, from the Bible records, that the old patriarchs had some means of invoking divine aid, to say nothing of the illustrious example given us by the great Wayshower, Christ Jesus. I could not think that the ages of the past had something that we do not have; and to get at the bottom of the proposition I took up the pursuit of truth. Not only did I look into the teachings of the Protestant churches, but also into Mohammedanism and the religions of India, and during this period my uppermost thought was that God would show me the truth.

Before starting on this quest—not feeling a deep sense of moral responsibility—I had acquired many bad habits, such as the drink and tobacco habits and kindred vices. Various expedients had been resorted to from time to time to throw them off, but without lasting results. My search through the various isms had shown me the futility of looking to any of them, and it was at this stage that a friend asked me to attend a Christian Science service. That was over six years ago, and I have been a regular attendant ever since. Through the study and application of this great truth I have been healed of all the old habits and desires; in fact they left me one by one as the mental house cleaning went on. During this time Christian Science has been the only remedy applied when physical ailments have been manifested. Once, when lost in the desert on a cloudy night, through the realization that "divine Love alone governs man," as we read in Section 1 of Article VIII of the Manual, my wandering footsteps were directed to my destination.

So many blessings have come to me through the study of Christian Science that it has been proven to me beyond cavil that Truth is the "sovereign panacea" (Science and Health, p. 407), and there is no limit to the good that will come to a man if he will only let it. I am most thankful to God for the help that I have received through this study, and am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for making the way clear to all Truth seekers.—
