With joy and deep gratitude to Christian Science I write this testimony of God's healing presence and loving care. In the summer of 1914 my sister, who had recently returned from a hospital after an operation, was very much depressed, as she did not feel that she was permanently relieved, and her condition imposed a heavy burden on every member of our family.
A friend whom we had all known several years before, but who was at that time a physical wreck, came to visit us, and the wonderful change wrought in her through Christian Science was noted. This friend made an engagement with my sister to go to see a practitioner, and I asked to accompany them. Only a few words from the practitioner convinced me what it means to understand that God is Love. Since early childhood I had tried to believe this as a truth, but could not realize it as such when taught that God took our loved ones from us for some wise purpose. When only a baby I had been deprived of a mother's love and care, and had always felt resentful, as I needed her so much.
For years I had a very painful ailment and thought I could not get along without a drug which seemed to give temporary relief. When I told the practitioner that I could not do without this remedy, she talked to me so beautifully of the truth which gives freedom from bondage, that I was healed instantaneously. On returning home I inquired of my friend where I could read the wonderful book that teaches us to know God as Love, also as all-power and presence. She kindly loaned me her copy of Science and Health, and little did I realize the sacrifice she was making. I visited the Christian Science church a few times, and then went to a small town, where I attended my own church.
