PROGRESS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the January 1918 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In August, 1902, one who had been healed through Christian Science invited a number of others, who had also found help in time of need through its teachings, to meet and consider the advisability of establishing Christian Science services in Wheaton. On October 11 arrangements were made for the first service, and invitations were sent to a number of families; also plans were formed for a lecture in the spring. On October 17 four members of The Mother Church met and organized the Christian Science Society of Wheaton, Illinois. They elected readers and officers and adopted bylaws. By December 11 the organization was completed; eight persons signed the by-laws, others soon following. A very pleasant room in the Adams Memorial Library Building was rented and regular Sunday services were started.

At a business meeting in March, 1903, the society agreed to subscribe regularly to the per capita tax of the state publication committee, also to make a liberal contribution to The Mother Church. On April 3 the Sunday school was organized, and four days later the first lecture was given. From then to the present time we have given one or more lectures each year. In July of the same year Wednesday evening meetings were started. From the first the interest was apparent and the meetings have been a great encouragement to us.

On December 8, 1904, the charter of the society was surrendered and the organization was incorporated as First Church of Christ, Scientist, Wheaton. Illinois. At the same time it was decided to contribute regularly to The Mother Church until the completion of its new edifice. It is with gratitude that we remember the total amount the church was able to send. On March 21, 1905, a reading room was opened in the business section of the town, the ladies of the congregation lovingly donating their services in caring for it.
