About nine years ago, while living...

From the October 1918 issue of The Christian Science Journal

About nine years ago, while living in Denver, Colorado, I was taken down with a severe attack of what is called typhopneumonia. I had been going a pretty fast gait, and that made the case more complicated. We were living at a hotel, so I was moved to a hospital, where I remained for about seven weeks. Twice during that time it was thought the end was very near. Finally the doctors told my mother that as she did not want me to die in the hospital they would consent to my being taken home, for they had done all they could for me and it was only a question of a few hours or a day or two at most before I would pass away. They added that if by any chance I should live, my mind would be affected.

I was therefore taken home to die, as the doctors said. I knew nothing of being moved to the hospital or of being brought home. The night I was taken home was one of my worst, and a very dear friend, a Christian Science practitioner, spent the greater portion of it with me. I finally dropped off to sleep and slept for about nine hours. When I awoke I was in full possession of all my faculties—under Christian Science treatment the delirium had passed away. From then on my recovery was rapid; in two weeks I was able to go out, and shortly after that I went to work. I was healed absolutely not only of the disease, but also of the inclination or desire to lead a dissipated life.

I am indeed thankful to God and grateful to Mrs. Eddy for the healing and for restoration to a better, happier, and more useful life.—
