My experience with doctors caused me to turn to Christian Science, which our Leader says is "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony" (Rudimental Divine Science, p. i). My wife was suffering from so-called quick consumption, and doctors said she would live only six days longer. In my extremity I called upon a Christian Scientist and asked him about the method of this work. He answered my question by telling me how Jesus healed without medicine but through a spiritual knowledge of God as Principle, and said that in every case the sick were healed by infinite Mind instead of matter. Then, after telling me that this same power would heal my wife of all her troubles, he said if I would get a Bible and aid by reading how Jesus healed all manner of diseases my wife would without doubt be restored to normal health.
I took this gentleman's advice at once and began reading the New Testament the second evening. I was just reading about how Jesus raised the dead when I heard the door open and on looking up saw my wife standing in the doorway. Three hours before this the nurse and I had lifted her from the bed to the lounge and hack as she was entirely helpless, so I was greatly startled to find that she could got out of bed alone and walk to the door without assistance. She asked me what I was doing and when I replied. "Reading the Bible," she quickly said. "Come in and read it to me." After I had read aloud for half an hour she fell asleep and I too retired with a grateful heart. On the day on which we had been told she would be buried we were out riding horseback and she was in perfect health. That was thirty years ago, and she is alive to-day in the same good health.
From the first time I talked with that Christian Scientist I have never had a desire for strong drink and have used no medicine of any kind. Prior to that it had cost me two dollars and fifty cents each day for liquor and tobacco. I have practiced this glorious truth all these years and am healthy and hearty to-day.— Portland, Ore.
