In the twenty-third chapter of Jeremiah we find the following wonderful statement of truth: "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord Our Righteousness."
Where can we find a more simple and profound statement of the truth that Christian Science is revealing to a burdened world? In these honest words the prophet goes straight to the heart of the whole matter. He announces—in these days of tottering thrones—the rightful King, the Lord of heaven and earth. He does more than that; he makes plain just how this King is to come to earth, and just how He will gain dominion and "execute judgment and justice in the earth." He will come inevitably, this King who is to "reign and prosper," but He will come through the individual consciousness,—yours and mine. He must become the master within to whom each of us yields obedience, before He can execute judgment in the earth.
Have we sighed for the great reconstruction, for the dawning of that day when war will be no more, for a glimpse of that future bright with freedom and progress for all? Do we want to bring it nearer and to help it grow,—the wonderful day which is beginning to dawn over the waters of mortal mind? Jeremiah tells us how we may help draw aside the curtains and let in the light of this fairer day; how we may become workmen whom the King may use to establish His reign on earth. He tells us in those words, "The Lord Our Righteousness." Does it not thrill us with a sense of wonderful individual possibility, the knowledge that the King unites us in His plan to "execute judgment and justice in the earth"? The Peace Council has considered world disarmament, the nations of the world are demobilizing their vast armies; but those who have acknowledged the great King, "The Lord Our Righteousness," in the way Christian Science reveals, will but square their shoulders for the forward march and make brighter the armor of spiritual understanding. They will pray, as did the psalmist of old, "Cleanse thou me from secret faults," that no subtle evil within impede the coming of the King; and they will march forward into the growing light with a song in their hearts, for does not the prophecy positively state, "In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely"?
