Having suffered much from weak arches and bunions I made an appointment with a surgeon for an operation on my feet, but three days before this was to be performed I was persuaded to try Christian Science. This resulted in a quick healing and a wonderful spiritual uplift. I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, for ten days and far into the nights, as it seemed that I could not put the book down until I had finished it. Before I had read it through I awakened to the fact that a bowel and stomach trouble of years' standing had disappeared. I had not mentioned this trouble to the practitioner, having accepted the verdict of several physicians that it was incurable. Four years later it seemed to reappear in an aggravated form and there was a complete stoppage of the bowels for thirteen days, when a normal condition was restored. During that time absolutely no inconvenience or pain was experienced and I ate anything I desired.
Six weeks after I began the study of Christian Science, one of my children manifested the disease known as mastoiditis. I applied for Christian Science treatment, but the trouble seemed to grow worse, and days ran into weeks with seemingly no improvement. Having felt the healing touch of Truth, I had lost all faith in materia medica, but my faith in Science was that of belief without understanding. At last there came a night when to mortal sense the child was in a critical condition, and it seemed as if I stood in a desert place, deserted by God. The tempter was asking me why I was trusting in this unknown power which I could not see, hear, or touch, but I resolutely answered in the words of Job, "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him."
At three o'clock in the morning, with a breaking heart I left the child and taking the Bible went alone into another room. I opened it at the ninety-first psalm, and after reading the eighth verse there came an importation of Truth so clearly that the error was uncovered and destroyed. I had been believing and telling the child that she had a diseased ear, but God would heal it. When I returned to her she was sleeping peacefully and awakened the next morning free from all pain and soreness. The ears were open and normal in forty-eight hours, after having discharged for over seven weeks. Blood poisoning, typhoid-malarial fever, abscessed throat, Spanish influenza, and appendicitis have been overcome in our family. One child was healed almost instantaneously of pneumonia, following the influenza, and another was restored after falling from a height of seventeen feet.
